Welcome to an exciting year at the Leaders Institute. At a time when the standard of leadership across the country and around the world seems to be declining and individualism growing, we look forward to working with you to make a difference in South Australia.

Our 2018 key programs

Leaders Institute of SA
Integral Leader
Our Integral Leader program begins on June 4 and is aimed at helping leaders become more strategic decision makers and effective change leaders. The 11.5 day program helps participants build the capacity to create innovative, collaborative and sustainable solutions to leadership challenges.
Modules include leading teams and communication for change. We received great feedback on last year’s program including this from Richard Fox, Director, Lutheran Media

“Learning from the leaders and fellow attendees has given me a genuine confidence and humility to lead, composure to work through a challenge or opportunity, and the tools to apply to every day issues and overall strategy. To be developed in such a way so that the techniques come naturally is very empowering.”  Click here for more information.

Leading Edge Peer Mentoring Programs
In 2018 we are running two Leading Edge Peer Mentoring Programs. The Leading Edge is a powerful facilitated program which provides a safe environment for a small group of participants to bring their real world challenges for discussion and to gain practical ideas on applying leadership thinking to tackle the challenges.

Participants grow in confidence in putting theory into action through the program which runs once a month for three hours over six months. Simon Rowberry, A/Chief Executive Officer, Barkuma, who has since completed the GLF in 2017, had this to say about the Leading Edge:

“The tools and strategies I have been exposed to have helped me to improve and a leader and allowed me to tackle complex organisational issues more effectively and efficiently. I highly recommend participation in the program to any current or emerging leader from organisations faced with complex workplace issues.” Click here for more information.

New Board member shows leadership on gender equality

Our new GLF nominee member of the Leaders Institute Board Sally Heidenreich, is now a lawyer but has served in combat positions in the Australian Army.
She’s shown leadership over the last few days on ABC radio in response to comments that women should not be in combat roles in our defence forces. According to Sally the comments are “sad, anachronistic, ignorant and regressive - the same sort of opinion that is driven by fear that we are seeing a lot in world politics lately”. Check out the audio from the 2 hour mark.

I’m not racist but…

A number of GLF alumni recently took part in a Think Tank in collaboration with the Equal Opportunity Commission's Stop Racism Taskforce to put forward ideas on ways to prevent covert racism.
It was heartening to hear the delight of one of the Taskforce’s members, a woman of African heritage, with the process alone: “I’m so happy to be in a room with so many white people who care about racism”. The outputs of the Think Tank will be used by the Taskforce to mould its future SA marketing campaigns and activities as well as to provide input to the new Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner.

Leadership thinking
In the lead-up to what revered South Australian political commentator Professor Dean Jaensch is calling “the most interesting election for a century” it’s interesting to consider is democracy the right model?
This ABC podcast discusses if democracy is at a “tipping point” as well as two radical proposals for changing the way our electoral system works. Dean will be joining our April GLF session on the election aftermath.

Can our brains cope with the complexity of modern life and solve the problems that confront us? Four leading experts, Dr Nicholas Gruen, Professor Robert Burton, Bruce Muirhead and Jane Tinkler give their views in an ABC podcast.

A new book Leading Responsibly in the Asian Century focuses on responsible leadership in the contemporary Asian context looking particularly at the interplay between leadership, responsibility and ethics. Author Associate Professor Fernando also discussed the concept of ‘quietism’ which is when a leader chooses not to act or speak out on important issues.

Legal aspects of joining a board
Many of our graduates seek to join a board to enable them to contribute to the community. Often a first board is a not-for-profit board and the following website provides easy to understand information about legal aspects of joining a board which you can tailor for the State in which your board operates.
