2018 GLF Update

Meeting with our patron the Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, was a recent highlight for this year’s GLFers. Universally they were moved and inspired by his life story, the leadership he showed and his ability to communicate powerfully and authentically. We also met with some political leaders with one topic of conversation being the power we as citizens have and our responsibility to be well informed on issues rather than making judgements on sound bites in the media. One of the key objectives of the GLF is to help participants take up this responsibility by immersing them more deeply in issues, broadening their horizons and unearthing different perspectives and values.

We also held a session looking at the impact and economics of the arts industry in SA. Robust debates occurred about the role of Festivals and the struggles of artists. A session on Communicating Powerfully and Authentically was also held in the lead up to the Community Action Project presentations.

Leadership Thinking
Leading through conflict
Conflict is traditionally seen as two-sided but veteran negotiator William Ury from Harvard Uni says that the third side needs to be considered. “We tend to see conflict as two-sided: labor versus management, husband versus wife, or Republicans versus Democrats.

And what we frequently fail to see is there is always a third side: it’s us, the surrounding community, the friends, allies, family members, neighbors … The most fundamental way in which the third side can help is to remind the parties of what’s really at stake. When we are locked in conflict, it can be easy to lose perspective and simply react … The third side can remind the arguing parties to go to a place of perspective — I call it the “balcony” — by reminding them to stop fighting and start talking, whether it’s for the sake of the children or the family or our community or the future". Incompetent Leaders
Many people leading organisations have stood out equally for their achievements and for their arrogant personality traits. This interview with Tomas Chamorro-Premuzik, Professor of Business Psychology at both UCL and Columbia University, says we need to think harder about who we give the top jobs to. Listen here.
