The Leaders Institute Board is very pleased to welcome two new board members. Houssam Abiad FGLF 2008 who is a business man, Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide, Chair of the Australia Day Council of SA, Chair of the Council for Australian-Arab Relations and a director of the Adelaide Central Market and Jane MacFarlane FGLF 2018 who is the CEO of the Helpmann Academy. We are sure they will be an asset to the organisation and help us to deliver on our Strategic Plan's aim which is to broaden and deepen our impact.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 23 at our new location, UniSA's Yungondi Building (just by the CityWest Tram Stop) with drinks from 5pm, meeting at 5.30pm, then drinks, nibbles and interacting. Our guest speaker is new Board Member Houssam Abiad. The main item of business at the brief AGM will be the noting of the annual financial result and voting to extend Board member Alexandrea Cannon for an additional term. We'd love to see you there (and we need a quorum from alumni and foundation members) — please let us know if you can come and if not, nominate a proxy.

Leadership Thinking

Ideas-based leadership or appeals to emotion and prejudice?
This issue we highlight the Kenneth Myer lecture by long-term political journalist Laura Tingle who ponders what constitutes leadership and what we expect of it in the modern age. She discusses the expanded role of our political leaders which she says is now to define not only where the country is headed, “They are asked to move into the moral realm in the absence of churches and asked to define what is acceptable behaviour in business, asked to define the nature of our culture and national values.”

She believes this can mean leadership is less about ideas but more about stirring the emotion and prejudices of followers. “The demise of frameworks of ideas-based leadership too easily leave a void to be filled by leadership based on emotion and prejudice. History tells us that it can lead to nationalism and scapegoating and if the status of other institutions have been diminished … the risks of political leaders emerging to exploit emotion and prejudice are dramatically increased.” Read the essay here.

Notions of love
On a lighter note but equally important, are the foundations of our family structures. What is love and are the competitive love at first sight notions portrayed on tv in shows like Married at First Sight what we should be basing our society on? The author of Love Factually – The science of how and why we love speaks entertainingly on this topic on the ABC.

Leadership in the media
In Australia on average, our top CEOs are in their roles for double the time (8.5 years) of our political leaders. A recent report from Isentia, the media monitoring firm, makes interesting reading as it explores leaders in the media and goes “beyond the headlines to analyse the nature of leadership and to question how we measure our leaders and role models”. Beyond polarisation
At a time when our political debate is dominated by polarisation and dysfunctional tribalism, how do we get on the same page and move forward. This book explores why we are polarised and provides ideas for how we can establish trust and commonality with each other. "We're all stuck here for a while," concludes author Jonathan Haidt, "So let's try to work it out."
