Seeing the system

The interconnectivity of society, even areas as diverse as the arts and environment, were brought into sharp focus at the latest Governor’s Leadership Foundation session. We looked at the impact of the arts in SA, both as an economic contributor, a powerful healer and reflector of our culture.

We also looked questioned the power of the arts to change minds. One of our speakers Adelaide Festivals CEO Christie Anthoney stated that the arts had the power to evoke empathy which set it apart from other professions and she then went on to speak about the fact that the arts had not yet played a large role in the climate change debate quoting environmental lawyer and advocate Gus Speth. “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, eco system collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy … and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that”.

The following day the GLF participants were immersed in the issues of our non-sustaining environment including a look at an alternative model via a visit to the Aldinga Arts Eco Village organised with Rob Absalom, FGLF 2018. This session coincided with the UN Climate Action Summit where the leadership of young female advocate Greta Thunberg created acclaim, debate and disparagement.

Help us grow leaders from disadvantaged backgrounds
Leaders Institute SA
Can you contribute to putting a participant from a disadvantaged background on the GLF? Last year the GLF graduates presented a cheque to the Leaders Institute to help fund a participant from a disadvantage background undertake the program.

This year they are doing it again and they’d like more support to raise the funds necessary. If you’d like to help too, you can donate via the following Bendigo Bank account: BSB 633 – 000, Account number 163790926

Also if you have a colleague or friend who is ready to participate in the 2020 Governor's Leadership Foundation we are still accepting applications. Find out more.
